In 2016 WOFKC partnered with International Health Initiative (IHI) in the provision of healthcare services to those most in need in the Dominican Republic, with a focus on the La Vega Province.
IHI is the leading non-governmental organization addressing public health issues in Constanza, a rural city of 120,000 people. Formed by volunteers who have been working in the region since 2008, IHI has developed strong partnerships with a wide range of community leaders.
The DR program, in common with all WOFKC programs is designed to be sustainable and demonstrably effective. We partner with Puente Desorollo International to provide a year round service to our patients for follow up checks, medical assistance etc. Puente also provide state-of-the-art data collection to ensure our patients are seen regularly, and that we check their ongoing health improvement.
Our goal is to partner with local providers and combine our resources to develop long-term, sustainable public health programs that support underserved communities. Based on years of experience and a series of conversations with community members and medical professionals, we have chosen the following areas of focus:
Chronic health conditions (hypertension, diabetes, anemia)
Malnutrition
Dentistry
Surgery (from 2020)
House to house (casa a casa) evaluations and screenings on an ongoing basis
Ongoing care and identification of urgent cases
Assistance to allow registration for insurance/access to existing services
Our program includes regular medical service trips to the DR, usually in January and May. We are always recruiting interested parties to serve with us, including all medical, dental and nursing professionals (and students). You do not have to be a healthcare professional to be useful on our trips! We have designed our programs that anyone can be a contributing member of the team.
