Philippines Program
The Philippines is a complex country with a rich and varied heritage and a challenging healthcare environment. In contrast to the bustling capital of Manila, much of the country is rural and dispersed widely across thousands of islands that make up the geography of the country. WOFKC has been committed to providing medical missions in the Philippines since our founding in 2004 (and our mission teams had years of prior experience to draw on) and it remains one of our flagship programs.
Our commitment to sustainability began with our program in the Philippines. Large scale medical missions (those that bring physicians and surgeons, nurses and lay volunteers from the US) to provide surgical assistance as well as clinic services depart annually for week to 10 day programs that are a year in the planning. Although these are the highest profile aspects of our program, they fit into a year round effort to help our patients, most recently in the region around Mindoro.
We work in partnership with local hospitals to ensure that patients have the follow up care they need as well as access to ongoing healthcare. We provide medical equipment that is technology appropriate and train local experts on its use. Perhaps most importantly we also partner with local organizations and nonprofits to help with the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes (a common, chronic condition endemic to the region) so that patients can obtain the medication they need over the long term, and return for monthly med checks and to renew their prescriptions. In addition we send smaller teams throughout the year to undertake dental and small scale surgical missions so that the overall medical situation is country is improved over the long term. These initiatives are designed over the course of a 3 to 5 year program, after which they become standalone, allowing us to provide similar programs elsewhere in country.
